Al-Biruni
Khwarizm (present-day Uzbekistan) · 973–1048; in Ghazni from 1017
Born in Khwarizm in 973, he knew Syriac, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew and Sanskrit. When Sultan Mahmud invaded Khwarizm in 1017, he took Al-Biruni to Ghazni, where he developed an interest in India.

Ibn Battuta
Tangier, Morocco · 1304–77; reached Sind in 1333
Reached Sind in 1333 and travelled via Multan and Uch to Delhi, where Muhammad bin Tughlaq made him the qazi (judge). In 1342 he was sent as envoy to China, going via the Malabar coast, the Maldives and Sri Lanka; he got home in 1354. He was amazed by the efficient postal system.
