Rises in the Brahmagiri hills (1,341 m) of Kodagu district in Karnataka. Its upper basin gets rain from the south-west monsoon (summer) and its lower basin from the north-east monsoon (winter), so it carries water all year with less fluctuation than other Peninsular rivers. Basin: 3% Kerala, 41% Karnataka, 56% Tamil Nadu. Tributaries: the Kabini, Bhavani and Amravati.
